how about rebloging this to get word out to more readers?
Well…that’s one interesting question we got there…
This isn’t addressed to you, but to the one who made the question. How could anyone believe that treating a woman like disgusting jerk off material when she’s in a coma is proof of love? It’s the furthest from it. I throw up of my mouth a little and think about Asuka and her self-respect when the fandom brings that up and aren’t being ironic or joking. There are other scenes to bring up, but the one that proves the opposite? No way.
>How could anyone believe that treating a woman like disgusting jerk off material when she’s in a coma is proof of love?
Let’s be frank, I adore Shinji but he was a disgusting towards Asuka the entire movie. People fail to realize he was using her as a foil to cope with his problems, like if Death & Rebirth didn’t make it clear enough: Shinji’s thoughts on Asuka are “Girl. Perplexing. Formidable. Indecipherable. Sex.”
Shinji approaches Asuka because he thinks she is Formidable, but it seems like he doesn’t give a fuck about the rest and the fact that the word “Sex” comes last doesn’t help at all.
Let’s analyze this scene that seems to fly over everyone’s heads.
- Shinji tells to Asuka “I want to help you, and be with you all the time”. Asuka tells him that he is hurting her.
- Shinji starts to show his true colors and now says “Help me (notice the sudden switch from “you” to “me”), only you can do it”. Asuka calls him on his bullshit telling him that in reality, anyone would do.
- Shinji ignores Asuka’s speech and says “Help me”. Asuka is pissed, pushes him and calls him pityful.
- Shinji starts to stand up saying “Somebody help me”. What happened to that “Only you can do it”?
- Shinji doesn’t care that he just proved Asuka’s point in front of her and starts to destroy the kitchen while screaming for help. Asuka, having said everything that needed to, just answer with a flat “No”.
- And Shinji starts chocking her.
And it seems like until the very end, Shinji still didn’t seem to care much about Asuka and chokes her as soon as she appears. After his cheek was caressed, it may seem like he stopped for her sake… I invite you to think again:
Look familiar to this
Next we have Shinji crying clutching Asuka’s tits:
Remember the symbolism for tits in Evangelion, splitting of the breast was one of Shinji’s biggest conflicts. and make some trackbacking:
And the entirety of Episode 16.
It looks more like Shinji didn’t stop chocking her because he felt bad for what he has done, but instead because the gesture reminded him of his mother. Shinji regressed to his mother issues.
This is probably why End of Evangelion is usually regarded as the “Bad End”, and it doesn’t help it’s reputation that it’s actually used as the “Bad End” of all Evangelion video games, even in the dating sim ones. Most notably NGE 2: Another Cases, in which Anno was heavily involved, where your purpose is to avoid EoE scenario from happening. In contrast, “Congratulations” is sometimes used as “Good End”.
Otsuki and Tsurumaki actually made a remark in Newtype about how EoE was a hopeless ruined world and that the purpose of Rebuild, now that Anno is out of depression and living a more balanced lifestyle, is to make Evangelion with a “Hopeful” ending. Most noticeable in the latest movie where “Hope” is the main theme of it, with Anno claiming that 3.0 contains the core, the essence of Rebuild Evangelion.
And there is even more imagery that needs to be considered. In Evangelion (specially the manga), hands a very important and sometimes even regarded as the highest form of communication: Hands are what link people, and what you do with your hands are very important. What are your hands for?
Rei, connected by blood.
Asuka, connected by… Uh…
I don’t think I need to explain this one.
When people discusses Shinji and Asuka relationship (not exclusively LAS, but relationship in general), it usually degenerates to Asuka being called a bitch and Shinji being the poor victim. While I cannot deny that Asuka can indeed be a major bitch, Shinji has his share of guilt too.
I think the reason why Shinji and Asuka will never be able to communicate is because they are the anti-tesis of each other.
- Shinji hates piloting the Eva, but has natural talent for it. Asuka wants to pilot the Eva and actually trains seriously for it. When Shinji started to beat Asuka in tests she started to fall into despair.
- Shinji seeks for other people acceptance, even of those who hate him, and he usually behaves or make decisions based on what he thinks will make him be accepted. Asuka does whatever she thinks it’s better for her and fuck the haters. Even after she hit the bottom, Asuka retained her individuality.
- The most obvious example is maybe End of Evangelion: both of them were at the lowest points and while Shinji wanted to die, Asuka was fighting for her survival.
And there are probably more examples but I can’t think of them right now.
In the manga, Asuka was stripped of her “Sexual Frustation” character trait and developed a healthier roomie relationship with Shinji, but it doesn’t seem to go beyond that: In the mangaverse version of End of Evangelion Shinji rescues Asuka from the MP Eva while claiming that he doesn’t want more people to die. Soon after Shinji starts Instrumentality by claiming “All the people I love is dead”.
One can argue that 4 (Toji, Rei, Kaworu and Misato) vs 1 (Asuka) is an unfair comparison, but his claim still bugs me. He was completely oblivious about what he did some minutes ago and that Asuka was still alive and didn’t consider her when he took that decision And poor Asuka was actually glad to see him. Did he just rescued Asuka out of duty? Because he promised Misato? Because he was using her to feel better? Accomplished?
And during the Instrumentality scenes when Shinji is thinking about people related to him, Asuka gets a little photo shared with Hikari while even Toji got his own portrait.
I think Rebuild is when we finally see Shinji truly caring about Asuka, she was completely reset as a character and has no frustration traits. Some people doubted it in 2.0 because in the sleepover and Bardiel scenes he was too Gendo-focused, but in 3.0 Shinji seemed genuinely happy about Asuka being alive. And Miyamura suggested that she will develop a big sister/mentor role towards him, which I’m positive about.
And this post is too long.
ok so here’s my personal theory about the last scene of EoE, and it’s very informed by my viewpoint as a woman:
asuka’s not caressing shinji’s face while he strangles at all. she tries to slap him, but hasn’t got the strength. and of course, of COURSE shinji interprets it as a…
Yeah I wouldnt say im being mobbed here on tumblr but I sure did piss a lot of people off. Glad im not alone in this interpretation though :)
i’m sorry i know you all follow me for oreo jokes but i have a lot of words tonight and no oreos and no cat SO YOu ALL HAVE TO SUFFER TOO
now while i’m looking stupid in tags i’m going to just say that i semi-seriously ship fllay and lacus (i’ve only seen random eps of gseed + the first ten or so eps i think)????
ADORABLE PINK HAIRED BABIES
also are the children of a coordinator and a natural coordinators or naturals??? is there any explanation for coordinators being less fertile than naturals??? while it makes sense to me that the Earth side of the war thinks it’s weird that Kira is ‘on their side’ why does athrun talk about kira being a traitor??? YOU DIDN’T INVITE HIM WHEN THE WORLD WAS BURNING ATHRUN, YOU LOOKED ON LIKE A DOLT AND ALMOST SHOT THE LADY WHO WAS HELPNIG HIM
who lets fourteen year olds pilot these things anyway at least in eva the robots are literally piloted by the psychosis of forsaken children
So, in a near future, I want to cosplay for the first time ever and I want to do Asuka in school uniform (because I’d look ridiculous in the plugsuit and it’s expensive anyway). And since I’m new to this whole thing I have a question:
For the hair, would it look better if I went with my natural hair (as seen in my sidebar image) or if I bought this wig right here (the orange one in the top left corner, which is about 3-5cm longer than my real hair). I only have a few more days to buy the orange wig, which is really cheap at the moment, so I need to make up my mind about it.
I’ve seen tons of Asuka cosplays for reference and I see that everyone goes for the bright orange wig, but I don’t know what to do because since my hair’s already red I think it’d be sort of “redundant” to buy the wig. And, like, instead of doing a cartoonish-looking cosplay I want it to be closer to “if Asuka had been a human” kind of thing, so I’m not too sure about that cartoonish-looking orange colour. But I need opinions from people who actually know about cosplays or have been to cons or anything like that because I want to do a good job portraying Asuka and I just want to know what you’d prefer to see in this cosplay in terms of hair.
Also, if you like NGE then I’d appreciate your input as a part of the fandom.
Share your wisdom with me, please and thank you.
I AM ALSO WORKING ON AN ASUKA COSPLAY! my wig is a much… gentler red than that one. the best asuka cosplays i’ve seen have trended towards the Rebuild colour palette for her hair, rather than the original series (everything other than the hair is a tossup whether it comes from NGE, EoE, or Rebuild, but the hair pallete is just *better* in rebuild). which if you have red hair, is probably closeish? the cartoonish orange colour isn’t one a lot of people can pull off, either. (i sure can’t!)
